My go to writer and thinker on this is the brilliant Tim Gill, his downloadable ebook ‘No Fear’is an excellent starting point for anyone wanting to separate the ‘facts from the phantoms’ of risk.

The ‘outside world’ is an ‘inherently dangerous place’ – as in it is not sterile, or with even surfaces, the weather also poses potential threats to comfort and security. Then we as Forest School Practitioners throw knives and tools into the mix!
